Insect Frass – Powerful Bio-Fertiliser & Inoculant
Insect Frass is a natural, nutrient-rich bio-fertiliser and soil inoculant made from the castings of black soldier fly larvae. Produced by Bardee in Victoria, Australia, using a controlled production process that transforms food waste into a valuable growing input.
Rich in organic nutrients, beneficial microorganisms and plant-available chitin, Insect Frass helps support healthy plant growth, soil biology, nutrient availability and natural plant resilience.
Key Benefits
-
Provides slow-release nitrogen, ideal for longer-season crops.
-
Helps improve nitrogen and phosphorus availability due to its low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio.
-
Supports increased plant biomass and the development of healthy, productive plants.
-
Contains beneficial bacteria, fungi and protozoa to help support a thriving root-zone ecosystem.
-
Contains plant-available chitin, which can help stimulate plants' natural defence responses.
-
Promotes beneficial soil microorganisms.
-
Suitable for soil, coco and hydroponic growing systems.
Application Rates
Garden Beds:
Apply 100–250g per m² and gently incorporate into the soil before planting. Reapply once seedlings are established. Mulch over the area to help maintain moisture.
Top Dressing:

Fertigation / Root Drench:
Mix 2 tablespoons per 9L of water.
Potting Mix:
Mix at 1.5–2%, approximately 15–20mL per litre of potting media.
Hydroponics:
Can be top-dressed directly onto growing media including coco, rockwool and hydroton.
- Add ½ cup per 100L of water. Strain before use with drip irrigation systems.
- For best results, brew an Insect Frass Tea for approximately 24 hours before application.
- Can be added directly to the reservoir in flood-and-drain systems.
- Australian made in Victoria from recycled food waste.
